ACHIEVING MASTERY AND SUCCESS THROUGH GROWTH MINDSET

Decades of research has led Psychology Professor at Stanford University, Carol S. Dweck, to identify people with two types of mindsets – fixed mindset and growth mindset.  People with fixed mindset believe that talent and intelligence are predetermined by nature and in finite supply, while people with growth mindset believe that everyone has the capacity to grow, develop and improve their intelligence and ability over time through deliberate practice. 
 
This is validated by advances in neuroscience on brain plasticity, which indicate that brains do change physically, functionally, and chemically throughout our lives and the changes are manifested through our abilities. Our brains are malleable and can be strengthened for further growth and development at all ages through mental exercises, much like how physical exercises can build muscles. The converse is true. Neural pathways that are underused will weaken or be replaced over time.
 
Professor Dweck’s studies revealed a significant correlation between how people thought of their own talent and its impact on their motivation, effort and approach to problems and issues. Growth mindset is not about feeling positive / good about oneself or motivating others through positive psychology.  It is about believing that everyone can improve and achieve mastery through perseverance and deliberate practice. It is not just about effort (that success will come to all who work hard), but growth.  It is about the ability to learn, unlearn and relearn in a myriad of situations and the determination to continue pushing the boundaries to improve. When individuals and companies are focused on growth, potential can be unleashed and mastery / success within grasp.

Programme Objective

This programme is intended to help individuals and companies learn, unlearn and relearn to achieve mastery and growth.

Programme Highlights

A compelling experience for leaders to enable teams in organisations to accelerate growth and change.  Combining knowledge, process, skillset and mindset, participants discuss, explore and apply tools and techniques to real business challenges during the inter-sessions.

 

Who should Attend

This intermediate programme is ideal for all professionals who are familiar with change and management concepts and are keen to further pursue a growth mindset to acquire mastery and success in their chosen profession or area of interest.

     

    SkillsFuture Skills Framework

    This programme is approved under the SkillsFuture Generic Skills and Competencies (GSC):

    • Developing People (Intermediate)
    • Lifelong Learning (Intermediate)
    • Teamwork (Intermediate)

     

    Programme Requirements

    Participants have to meet a minimum attendance rate of 75% and are required to submit a group project. Only upon meeting the minimum attendance rate and passing of the project, will participants be issued a Certificate of Completion.

    Participants who failed the group project will be given a chance for re-submission at a fee of SGD481.50 (incl. 7% GST), within 2 weeks after the notification of result. 

    Participants who meet the minimum attendance rate but do not achieve a pass for the project will be issued a Certificate of Participation.

     

    Certified Professional Business Manager (CPBM)

    The Achieving Mastery and Success Through Growth Mindset programme is part of the Professionals Management Toolkit (PMT) Series. Participants who successfully complete 6 programmes offered by SMUA-HCML within 5 years will receive the Certified Professional Business Manager (CPBM). For example:

      Fees

      Full Fee:
      SGD5,189.50 (incl. 7% GST) per person

       

      For Singapore Citizens / Permanent Residents
      Fee payable to SMU after 70% SSG Funding:
      SGD1,556.85 (incl. 7% GST) per person

       

      For Singapore Citizens aged 40 years & above
      Fee payable to SMU after 70% SSG Funding & 20% SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy:
      SGD586.85 (incl. 7% GST) per person

       

      For Singapore Citizens aged 35 years & above (13 years & above for Persons with Disabilities) and earning a monthly income of not more than SGD2,000 
      Fee payable to SMU after 70% SSG Funding & 25% Workfare Training Support Scheme:
      SGD344.35 (incl. 7% GST) per person

       

      For SMEs* sponsoring their employees who are Singapore Citizens / Permanent Residents
      Fee payable to SMU after 70% SSG Funding & 20% Enhanced Training Support for SMEs
      SGD586.85 (incl. 7% GST) per person

       

      Fees include tuition, course materials, instructor's fee, 2 tea break refreshments per day (excl. lunch) during the programme and 1 assessment (project) per person for the programme.

      SkillsFuture

      SkillsFuture Credit:
      Singapore Citizens aged 25 and above, and self-funding may use their SkillsFuture Credit (up to SGD500) to defray part of the course fee. With effect from 19 May 2017, SkillsFuture Credit claim will only be paid directly to the training provider from SkillsFuture Singapore.  Claim should be submitted via the Training Exchange (click here) and SMU Academy has to be informed on the Claim ID no. and claim amount in order for the correct payable course fee amount to be reflected on the invoice.  Please click here for the User Guide on how to claim for SkillsFuture Credit.

      *Enhanced Training Support for SMEs:
      SMEs must meet all of the following criteria:

      1. Organisation must be registered or incorporated in Singapore
      2. At least 30% local shareholding by Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
      3. Employment size of not more than 200 (at group level) or with annual sales turnover (at group level) of not more than SGD100 million
      4. Trainees must be hired in accordance with the Employment Act and fully sponsored by their employers for the course
      5. Trainees must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents

      MR LEONG KWONG YEE  
      Founder and Managing Director, TAO Consulting

      Kwong Yee has a strong global understanding and experience of business practices and cultures, skilled at establishing credibility with senior executives and in discussing complex, client business issues, particularly around talent management and driving business performance.

      He has led very capable and experienced specialists in helping clients, both external and internal, with issues of executive education, talent management, leadership development and workforce optimisation.

      Prior to founding TAO Consulting, Kwong Yee worked at Mercer, firstly as the Managing Director and Region Market Development Leader for East China, based in Shanghai and then led Mercer’s Talent & Diversity COE for Growth Markets region covering Asia, Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

      Kwong Yee was the Business Development Director for DDI Mainland China and Hong Kong, working directly with key DDI clients and consulting with clients to identify needs and propose solutions, specifically in the areas of talent and succession management, development, and selection. Kwong Yee also worked as VP of Sales, Greater China in SHL, based in Hong Kong.

      He graduated with Executive Masters in Business Administration from Columbia University, London Business School, Hong Kong University Business School and Bachelors of Arts (Philosophy) from The National University of Singapore.  He is currently enrolled in Human and Organisational Development PhD programme at Fielding University.

      Breakfast Session: Pursuing a Growth Mindset for Organisational & Personal Breakthrough

      On 13 March 2018, a 2-hour workshop was conducted to help participants gain a deeper appreciation of the two types of mindset (fixed mindset and growth mindset) and how a growth mindset can be the first step for them to achieve mastery in almost all aspects of life.  Mr Leong Kwong Yee also shared a few ways which they could apply a growth mindset in their daily life through perseverance and deliberate practice.
