SMU-SingHealth Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Management and Leadership (GDHM) 

 

 

The first and only programme of its kind in Singapore, the SMU – SingHealth GDHM aims to nurture highly competent and focused healthcare professionals into holistic and broadminded business leaders in the healthcare sector. The programme was conceptualised and co-designed by senior leaders from SMU and SingHealth.

Now into its 11th intake, participants can gain business, leadership and management capabilities, in addition to the latest insights and perspectives of the healthcare industry through the programme.

Programme Objectives

Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will be able to: 
 
  1. Acquire an overview of the global healthcare landscape
  2. Explain and compare strategies that are employed by Singapore’s healthcare institutions vis a vis other international healthcare institutions
  3. Lead self and teams with mindfulness and confidence 
  4. Formulate an action plan for change
  5. Apply marketing and branding concepts to raise customers / stakeholders’ satisfaction
  6. Apply economic and financial analysis to healthcare services
  7. Implement an operations improvement project
  8. Apply tools to manage and communicate information in a crisis
 

Who Should Attend

Public sector Clinicians, Nursing & Allied Health Professionals and Hospital Administrators with significant managerial responsibilities or demonstrate exceptional leadership potential in their course of work. Selected professionals from private healthcare sector and those from related sectors (e.g. non-profit, voluntary welfare organisations, ILTC sectors) are welcome to apply. Admission is on competitive basis and SMU and SingHealth reserve the right to refuse admission to any candidate without assigning any reason.

 
Admission Requirements

Participants should:

  • have a bachelor’s degree; and
  • hold a current position with significant managerial responsibilities or demonstrate exceptional leadership potential in their course of work.

Curriculum Uniqueness

GDHM’s unique curriculum is co-developed and jointly taught by leading SMU faculty, senior SingHealth leaders and industry veterans. Participants will acquire business, leadership and management capabilities and gain the latest insights and perspectives in the context of the healthcare industry.

 

Meals

Lunch and refreshments for 2 tea breaks will be provided each day during the programme. Meals provided are “no pork no lard”. If you have special dietary requirements, please inform us accordingly.

 
Certification

Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Management and Leadership by SMU and SingHealth

Participants must achieve at least 75% class attendance rate and pass 60% of the programme assessments.

Participants who failed the first assessment will be required to sit for a supplementary assessment and each participant is allowed up to 1 supplementary assessment. Participants will be required to pay a fee of SGD535 (incl. 7% GST)/supplementary assessment per module.

Certificate of Completion in Healthcare Management and Leadership (for individual module)

Participants must achieve at least 75% class attendance rate and pass 60% of the module assessments.

Certificate of Attendance in Healthcare Management and Leadership (for individual module)

Participants must achieve at least 75% class attendance rate.

Fees
Full programme fee :    SGD24,647.45 (incl. 7% GST & registration fees) per person
     
Individual module fee* : SGD5,350.00 (incl. 7% GST) per person
     

Fees include tuition, course materials, instructors’ fees, lunch and 2 tea break refreshments per day during the programme.

* Participants will not be granted a SMU-SingHealth GDHM upon completion of 6 individual modules at different timeframe. In order to qualify for the SMU-SingHealth GDHM, participants must meet the programme requirements and enroll for the full programme upon application.

Supplementary assessment fee at SGD535.00 (incl. 7% GST) per module, up to 1 supplementary per person.
 

SkillsFuture Credit

Singapore Citizens aged 25 and above, and self-funding may use their SkillsFuture Credit (up to SGD500) to defray part of the course fee. Please click here for the User Guide on how to claim for SkillsFuture Credit.  Claim should be submitted via the Training Exchange (click here).  

 

Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP)

SkillsFuture Study Awards

The programme is also eligible for SkillsFuture Study Award for the Healthcare Sector.  The SkillsFuture Study Awards encourage Singaporeans to develop and deepen specialist skills needed by future economic growth sectors or in areas of demand such as the healthcare sector. It supports Singaporeans who already have deep specialist skills to develop other competencies. Over 500 study awards are available from October 2015 for Singaporeans to apply. Successful SkillsFuture Study Awards applicants will receive a monetary award of S$5,000 which can be used to defray out-of-pocket expenses associated with the course that the applicant will be taking. It can also be used on top of existing Government course fee subsidies.

Module Synopses

Module 1: Strategy & Global Healthcare Landscape

This module covers competitive strategies and the key theories relevant to healthcare settings. It includes specific focus on the complex Singapore health system from a political, philosophical, financing and delivery point of view. Participants will understand the architecture of healthcare systems and also be taught to make strategic choices, as well as to execute and implement change within the systems.  The module will also provide participants with an insight to academic medicine.

 

 

Module 2: Leadership & People Management

This module provides a holistic view of leadership and participants will be taught skills to manage one self and others. It also examines effective top-down and bottom up management of change. Other topics covered include conflict management, motivation, mentoring and coaching. The rising trend of learning organisations will also be included in this module.

 

 
 
Module 3: Aligning Healthcare Strategy & Customer Value Delivery

This module makes the important link between high performing microsystems and patient safety such as having good healthcare teams as part of an essential operational strategy. A good marketing strategy and the creation of business value which align to business strategies are also crucial for delivering good customer value. Participants will also learn how to add value to hospital service experiences in the quest to achieve higher customer satisfaction levels. Other topics covered include branding, service excellence and delivering on brand promise.

 

 

Module 4: Health Economics & Financial Management

This module applies economic analysis to healthcare. Topics covered include behavioural economics in healthcare and market analysis for healthcare industries. Financial management topics include cost behaviours, budgeting and variance analysis. Participants will get to understand financial statements and to infuse financial considerations in decision making for clinical services. The module will also highlight the changes in healthcare financing policies.

 

 
 
Module 5: Operations Excellence and Quality Management

This module aims to explore the strategic approach to resource allocation in healthcare. The focus includes improving systems and controls, and leverage on IT advances to provide more efficient access or help which patients need. Other important topics such as patient safety, risk management and Total Quality Management are also covered in this module.

 

 

Module 6: Ethics, Risk, Crisis & Media Management

This module covers the management of the complex healthcare system that includes understanding the whole risk cycle from identification to assessment to Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and Business Continuity Management (BCM). Other topics covered include organsational stewardship, ethics, political sensitivity and an understanding of different examples of risks present under various risk domains. Participants will also be equipped with crisis communication and media management skills to prepare them in managing and facing the media.
